amyFullLengthHometown: Sanford, NC…… but Wilmington, NC has been my home for the past 9 years

- Age: 33

- Education:
Appalachian State University
NCIDQ Certified

- Current Occupation:
Owner, Principal Designer of
Amy Tyndall Design
www.amytyndall.com

- Years designing: 10

- First design memory:
Going to the fabric store with my Mom to pick out fabrics to use for window treatments. I LOVED the fabric store- and it became obvious very quickly that I was the only child in there that didn’t hate it!

- Why I should win NNTMH Designer of the year?
Because I’m the interior designer that everyone can relate to. I believe that great design isn’t only for the rich, but for anyone who wants to make their world a prettier, more functional one. Everyone can afford to make their space better- it just takes some creativity, smart budgeting and elbow grease.

- What would be your ultimate dream design project?
A luxury hotel in an exotic location

- When designing, what can’t you live without?
My Benjamin Moore fan deck, a Fine Point Sharpie and a tape measure

- At what point of the day do you feel most inspired?
Middle of the night. No lie- I have to keep a notepad on my nightstand to write down ideas so I don’t forget them! And I hate to admit this, but my husband has caught me more than once rearranging furniture in a room at 3am. Yes, at least it was in OUR house!

- Name a design trend that should go away?
These “pick your entire room” furniture stores. So bad! Why do they think everything have to match? Yuck!

- State one thing that others don’t know about you.
I make a banana pudding that will make you weak in the knees!

- What did you aspire to be as a child?
I wanted to be just like my Mom.

- Strangest design request:
I once had clients worried about their carpet color selection being too close to the color of their golden retreiver. They actually said to me: “What if we can’t find our dog because he’s the same color as the carpet?”….. Wish I was kidding

- You want me to design around that?
Hey, no matter what my opinion may be- if it is that important to your client- make it important to your design.

- My secret to design: Inspiration is EVERYWHERE- just pay attention!

- What I plan to do with my $25,000: Wouldn’t you like to know? Ha! Seriously- I would use it to invest in my business, put some in savings for a rainy day, and go on the honeymoon my husband and I never had the opportunity to take!

- Favorites:

Color: Do you really expect me to pick only ONE?

Music: That’s like asking my favorite color! I love and appreciate so many different types of music… from The White Stripes to Bob Dylan to Johnny Cash to the Beastie Boys. What I listen to really depends on my mood.

Song: Yellow by Coldplay, Mother by Pink Floyd, old-school classic church hymns, and Christmas songs (O’ Holy Night is the most beautiful song ever, no matter who sings it!)

Food: Fresh Strawberries

Website: www.people.com

Movie: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

TV Show: Seinfeld (yes, still!)

Room to design: Kitchen

Thing in your home: My husband and 2 little doggies!

Hobbies: Furniture refinishing, antiquing, gardening- oh…..and anything that makes me laugh (as in hanging with my sister and my girlfriends! so good for the soul!)

Design tip: Don’t be intimidated by design…embrace it! No matter your budget- you can always afford to make your surroundings a better place.
